FDA WARNS FAMILY DOLLAR SHOPPERS OF RODENT INFESTATION

Shoppers in six states: Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, and Tennessee—are being warned about products from Family Dollar

purchased from January 1, 2021 and now may be unsafe.

Inspectors from the Food and Drug Administration have discovered extreme violations of sanitary conditions at the Family Dollar distribution facility located in West Memphis, Arkansas. A consumer complaint in January led to the discovery of live and dead rodents, dead birds and fecal droppings from the animals, rat feces and urine, and evidence of nesting and chewing on items. Over 1,100 dead rodents at the location and internal records from the FDA show a total of 2,300 rodents between March 29th and September 17th of last year.

The FDA advises people not to buy any food, cosmetic, animal foods, medical devices, or over-the-counter medications at Family Dollar locations in the six states mentioned above. They are working with Family Dollar to start a voluntary recall of the products affected. If you have handled any of these items from Family Dollar, you are advised to contact the company, discard of the items, and immediately wash your hands.

Undamaged glass packaging or all-metal can containers might be suitable for consumption only if properly sanitized; this can be done removing the label, thoroughly washing the item with soap and water, and then submerging the item in either boiling hot water for 2 minutes or in 5 gallons of clean water with one cup of unscented household bleach for 15 minutes. Make sure to clean the any areas these products were sitting on as they might be contaminated as well.

If you have any health concerns after handling any of these products, you are advised to speak to a doctor or medical professional by the FDA; rodents are known vectors of diseases and bacteria.
